In the third part of this series, Trichologist, Dr Shahid Shamsher talks about the ill effects of excess oil on the scalp.

Previously, we saw how the scalp secretes its own natural oil called sebum, which provides lubrication for the movement of the hair. However the same sebum when secreted in excess amounts can lead to a host of problems. When first secreted, it is  semi-solid by nature, but after a while starts solidifying, forming sebum plugs, which get stuck to the hair and scalp. This is the same process by which glue-products like “m-seal” etc, work. Once the sebum plug has been formed, then if it is scratched or removed like during washing, it can lead to more hair loss. The correct thing therefore is to not allow the sebum to remain on the scalp long enough for plugs to form, thus denying it the opportunity of causing any damage to the hair.

Folk wisdom will have you believe that it is compulsory for everyone to put oil on the head. However the reality is that every scalp has its own natural oil secretion, called sebum. It is believed that sebum provides lubrication to the part of the hair inside the skin, where externally applied oil may not even reach. Sebum thus makes it easy for you to comb your hair forwards or backwards without causing any frictional damage to the hair shaft. For most people the sebum produced by their sebaceous gland under the skin is enough to keep the hair healthy and moisturized negating the need to apply any external oil. So the next time someone advises you to put oil on the scalp, ask yourself whether you really need to. The natural oil secretion is more than sufficient.

Next week we will talk about the dangers of excess oil.

In this new series of articles, Trichologist Dr Shahid Shamsher sets about correcting the basic facts about hair roots.

Many patients express a lot of anxiety even on having a normal hair fall, because they mistake the white portion at the end of hair as the root of the hair. This mistake probably arises from the belief that hair is just like a plant which carries the root at its end. However that is a completely false notion. The white part seen at the end of every hair is merely the hair bulb, which in fact has no role to play in forming a new hair. The hair root is always attached to the skin within the hair follicle and never “falls off”. And if the roots are alive then a new hair can be generated. Thus every time you lose one hair strand, it need not worry you as a permanent hair loss. Next week we will talk about the natural oil secretion of the scalp.
